Plans Underway for Daniel Island’s
Park Day: A Day of Giving
9/23/2008
October is just around the corner and that means plans for Park Day on Daniel Island are in motion! Now in its eighth year, this “Day of Giving” features fun games and activities, delicious food and live music while also providing awareness and funds to more than 30 area non-profits. With more events than ever along the banks of the Wando River, and the opportunity to help support local charities, Park Day is a fall tradition not to miss!
Festivities at this year's Park Day will include live musical performances by The Island Trio, children's performer Gregg Russell and the East Coast Party Band. Activities and events include everything from pumpkin painting and children's crafts, sailing on the Schooner Pride and gardening exhibits to a “Wild Kingdom” showcasing a petting zoo, exotic and native birds, reptiles and more. There will also be jump castles, pony rides, climbing walls, a bungee trampoline and tons of activities for all ages! For a complete list of activities, visit www.danielislandparkday.com.
In the Wando Fields, the Park Day Charity Challenge will have participants racing around as area businesses compete in a fun and slightly competitive field game event for the chance to win $5,000 to benefit the company's charity of choice.
A variety of restaurants and vendors will be offering Lowcountry treats and other favorites, including barbeque, oysters, fresh shrimp, hush puppies, ice cream, pizza, boiled peanuts and more. Football fans can catch the day's games on the big screens at the Island House Sports Pub. Beer and other beverages will be available for sale.
Visitors to Park Day are encouraged to bring their dogs and visit the Dog Showcase, which will feature a dog wash, outdoor café with dog treats, pet training advice, a doghouse raffle and other dog related activities. Representatives from seven animal rescue groups will also be on hand with dogs available for adoption.
In 2007, approximately 9,000 Daniel Island and Lowcountry residents took part in this fun-filled fall festival, helping raise more than $45,000 for area non-profit organizations. 2008 beneficiaries include the American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Trident Area, Keeper of the Wild, Lowcountry Food Bank, Operation Home, East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, United Methodist Relief Center, Philip Simmons Foundation, Communities in Schools and many others.
Park Day is made possible by the generous support of over 40 sponsors. This year's “Marquee Sponsors” include Daniel Island Real Estate, Home Telecom, Blackbaud, SunTrust, Daniel Island News and 95SX.
Admission and parking is free. Some events will require a nominal fee in order to raise money for designated charities. For an event map and complete schedule of events, visit www.danielislandparkday.com.
